Vascular Plant Families - IBC XVI
Preface: This is a collection of approximately 1,350 images
representing about 235 families of vascular plants. Descriptions are included for
nearly 100 families. The images are all in color and are 400 x 600, 600 x 400, or 400 x
400 pixels in size. Thousands of additional plant images grouped in six thematic
categories are available on the worldwide web as described and linked below.
These materials are provided for instructional and educational
purposes. Any duplication or publication of text or images herein for commercial gain
without explicit written permission of the owner or photographer constitutes breach of
trust and violation of copyright.

Plant Families - This is a collection of descriptions and
captioned images of vascular plant families for use in instruction. About 235 families are
represented among the approximately 1,350 images in this category.
- Manoa
Campus Plants - More than 325 species of plants on the campus of
the University of Hawaii at Manoa are characterized in words and about 440 color images.
Common names, family names, scientific names, campus locations, and notes of interests are
provided for each species.
- Hawaiian
Silversword Alliance - All 30 species of Argyroxiphium,
Dubautia, and Wilkesia comprising the Hawaiian silversword alliance are
illustrated and characterized. Features of the adaptive radiation of this group, including
stature and habit, flower and fruit diversity, leaf morphology and anatomy, ecological and
physiological adaptations, chromosomal diversity, chemical evolution, genetic variation,
hybridization, molecular evolution, and origin and relationships are treated in a series
of expository web pages.
- Hawaiian
Native Plants - This is a collection of hundreds of images
representing more than 400 species of native Hawaiian plants. Most of these species are
endemic, i.e., unique to Hawaii.
- Alien
Plants in Hawaii - This is a collection of
illustrations and information about the weedy plants that threaten Hawaii's native
ecosystems. It is a project initiated by Dr. Clifford W. Smith, formerly Project Leader,
Cooperative Park Studies Unit, University of Hawaii Botany Department.
- The
Lousewort Genus Pedicularis (Scrophulariaceae) - A
collection of images of an interesting circumpolar genus of about 500 hemiparasitic
species.
