Description

Tree to 30 m tall and 80 cm dbh. In coastal areas, it usually has a twisted trunk and deformed crown. Young shoots are reddish-brown, covered with dense reddish dawn. Leaves to 3 cm long. Cones to 3 cm long, on short shoots with leaves. Each cone has up to 50 scales. Seed scales rounded, velvety. Pollination in April-May, seeds mature in August-October (3).

Range

Russia, China and North Korea. Locally common in coastal Ussuriland (Ol'ga Bay NE of Vladivostok is type loc.); rare and local inland. Found at a few locations in China (Jilin and E Liaoning) and North Korea (1, 3); also found at up to 1000 m in the Sikhote-Alin Mountains, Ussuriland (2). Listed as rare in Russia.

The largest specimens are said to be on Oblachnaya Mt., in Ussuri River headwaters (3).
