Leaf Shapes: Simple Leaves

 

Needles: Typical for Coniferae, but occur also in other plant groups.

Examples: to the left: Yew (Taxus baccata); middle picture: Marestail (Hippuris vulgaris)
Linear: Typical for Poaceae (to the right: bamboo)
Lanceolate: Goldenrod (lower left: Solidago virgaurea), Ribwort (lower right: Plantago lanceolata)


Ensiform: to the left: Chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum)
Egg-shaped: middle picture: Common Beech (Fagus silvatica)
Elliptic: to the right: Rhododendron (Rhododendron williamsianum), lower left: Ceratonia siliqua
Orbicular: lower right: Honeysuckle (Lonicera implexa)


Peltate: The petiole springs from the middle of the leaf: Nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus)


Hastate: to the left: Ivy (Hedera helix)
Kidney-shaped: to the right: Asarabacca (Asarum europaeum) and below: Aristolochia (Aristolochia clematitis)


Cordate: Leaflet of Clematis recta (to the left) and Peltandra virginiana (middle picture)
Sagittate: to the right: Pondweed (Potamogeton natans)
Spear-shaped: below: Larger Bindweed (Calystegia sepia)
